During the extension in the 1990s, Schön Klinik Vogtareuth made plans for a new four-storey surgical centre equipped with an intensive care and respiratory unit. The extension is positioned at the south-west corner of the site and has a two-storey connection with the existing buildings.
On the ground floor, the new building contains the main entrance, same-day surgery rooms, emergency admissions, the intermediate care and the intensive care unit. The modern surgery rooms are located on the first floor together with the adjoining rooms, a central entry zone and the recovery room. The layout of the surgical area is compact, and its ways are short. The organisation of the layout improves the workflow and lowers the process costs through the efficient use of spatial resources. The second floor contains the changing rooms for the staff, lounge areas and the ventilation system. Located on the basement level are most of the technical spaces and the central sterilisation rooms. The layout of the specialist areas is generously designed to ensure a hygienic, safe working environment. The emphasis lays on ensuring visual contact between the staff and the patient areas.
The main feature of the outer appearance of the building is a screen façade made of horizontal wooden slats in front of the upper floors above a plinth with grey-fibre cement panels. The slats are attached on a steel sub-structure and matched with the type of rooms behind it. This system ensures people to look outside, provides a uniform outer appearance and guarantees at the same time privacy and sun protection. Generous cuts in this screen allow uninterrupted views on the Alps from the central staff lounge and the recovery room. Besides that, the cuts also accentuate the façade and contribute to its lively effect.
