Ostalbklinikum Aalen - Women’s Hospital
Description
The new women’s hospital (Frauenklinik) is yet another key stage on the way to transforming the Ostalb-Klinikum Aalen into a modern “health” centre of excellence. The proportions of the new building are such as to blend into the existing building. With its link to the central hospital, the stand-alone building continues the structural appearance of the southern side of the premises. Thanks to its skilful positioning it allows of a later extension to the central specialist buildings. The arrangement is a rectangle, with an inner courtyard at the upper levels. This permits natural light to permeate into all the relevant
areas. With their vertical arrangement, the main medical focus of the hospital such as the clinical laboratory, the out-patient departments, neonatology, obstetrics with childbirth, puerperal care and general nursing care for oncological patients take up the architectural theme of the specialist areas in the existing building.
Although the new structure adopts the basic design lines of the existing buildings, yet it is different from the point of view of materials and the design of the façades. The façades playfully highlight the contrast between generous glazed areas, white plastered areas and metal panels accentuated with different shades of green.
