The new extension of the main building, which dates from the 1970s, concentrates all the surgical facilities of the hospital. The 18 operating rooms on the first and second floor are organised in sub-units of 4-5 operating rooms each. The design eliminates the exit rooms and concentrates the preparation process in central zones. The instrumentation facilities are located together in a sterile working zone. The change-over times are considerably reduced because of these improvements.

A holding area (with daylight) combined with the recovery room facilitates short distances for the staff when they move the patients and besides that provides a humane environment for the transitional area to the operating rooms. The new surgical centre is the focal point of the new hospital. As a high-tech building for high-tech medicine, the new building adds a futuristic look to the hospital site with its exciting contrast between the closed cubes of stone and the large transparent glass walls.
