The former building structure of the hospital in Augsburg was not suitable anymore for a modern mother and child centre. Therefore the hospital decided to put up a new building, linked to the main building and the paediatric oncology department. Because of this connection, the existing diagnostic and therapy institutes can be used by both.
The new building, which comprises two cubes opposite each other, each with its inner courtyard, is designed to save on resources and to increase the “feel-good factor” in patients and staff. The family wards, obstetrics and delivery room, paediatric surgery and intensive care are all housed under the roof.
With its projecting service balconies, the mother and child centre takes up the horizontal line of the existing building. The colourful generously-glazed façade blocks alternate with the fibreglass concreted areas to enhance the individuality and nature of the building.
