The new central operating department at Wesel Protestant Hospital replaces the old one, which could not be refurbished because the rooms were too low and the access structure was not according to the new standards. The two-storey extension with the operating department, rectal centre and two surgical practices hast the shape of a cube. The volume connects to the existing building.

While the technology, staff rooms and administration house in the basement, all patient areas and operating theatres are on the ground floor. Processes have been optimised and bright, warm furnishings and fittings with lots of natural light and good views to outside ensure the very best working conditions. A recovery room with an artificial sky installation under the ceiling offers the patient a pleasant environment directly after his surgery. The relatively low height of the building, its green-tinged façade and the green roof harmonise well in a subdued way with the existing buildings and the surrounding parkland.
