The new building (approx. 3,000 m² of usable area) has been designed to house the joint pathology institutes of the Ruhr University Bochum and the Bergbau-Berufsgenossenschaft (Miners Compensation Board).

It forms the centrepiece of the new complex and the design enables the institutes to combine some of their internal organisation. The two-storey base is set into the adjoining sloping ground and contains the post-mortem areas

and the lecture rooms.

It is surmounted by the administration and laboratory floors mounted on pillars. A spacious entrance hall with a multi-storey atrium connects the auditoria and functional floors.

Innovative technical and structural concepts ensure optimal climatic and hygienic working conditions thanks to the absorption and retention qualities of the structural mass itself.
