The new 9-floor ward block is one of the cornerstones of the investment programme 2000+ at the Bergmannsheil University Hospital. It comprises of an accident and reconstructive surgery centre and a department for abdominal disorders, areas of care which were lacking in the original building.
On the ground floor, there are several well-equipped out-patient clinics and state-of-the-art wards, with 41 intermediate care beds on the operating floor. Additionally, there are four floors for regular care, with 151 beds, and two floors for optional private care, with 56 beds. The architect used an innovative, technical concept, usually used in high-rise buildings. This technique made it possible to have open support spaces.
Proactive cooling techniques provide rooms with optimal ambient conditions. The wards are flooded with light due to the glazed façade from floor to ceiling.
